Slave - Wait For Me 1981

The group was formed in Ohio by New Jersey native horn player/songwriter/producer Steve Washington (funk obviously runs in the blood - Washington's uncle was Ralph 'Pee Wee' Middlebrook of the famed Ohio Players). Slave performed edgy funk grooves that rival (or even overwhelm) what is considered 'hard' street music today. By the time the Cotillion/Atlantic album "Stone Jam", originally release in September 1980.

Rose Royce - Fresh Cut 1987

Rose Royce - Fresh Cut 1987
Rose Royce were originally based in Los Angeles and recorded under the name of Total Concept Unlimited. In 1973, the group toured the U.K. and Japan, supporting Edwin Starr. Edwin Starr had recommended the group to Norman Whitfield, who in turn, signed them to his own label under their new group name, Magic Wand. Norman teamed the group up with Yvonne Fair, also becoming the studio and show band for The Undisputed Truth.

It was Joe Harris (from The Undisputed Truth), who discovered a singer called Gwen Dickey during a tour date in Miami, who was singing with a group called The Jewels at that time. Gwen travelled to L.A. to audition for Norman, who in turn gave her the stage name of Rose Norwalt. Rose Royce came into being, co-inciding with a project which Norman Whitfield was currently working on, namely, the movie 'Car Wash'.

Skipworth & Tuner - Thinking About Your Love 1985

Skipworth & Tuner - Thinking About Your Love 1985
Eighties singing duo Skipworth & Turner burst on the scene with the catchy dance hit "Thinking About Your Love." Produced by Patrick Adams (Musique, Inner Life, the 1980 hit disco remake "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" on Salsoul Records), "Thinking About Your Love" hit number ten R&B on Billboard's charts in spring 1985.

Syracuse, NY-born keyboardist Rodney Skipworth and singer Phil Turner, a Memphis native, were a startling combination that came together at a unique period that allowed for the fusing of the duo's gospel/R&B/soul influences with the emerging MIDI/keyboard synthesizer technology, the same synergy that lead to the creation of some exciting, trailblazing music epitomized by such groups as the System.

Though Skipworth & Turner's only other charting single was "Can't Give Her Up" (on which Turner displays his impressive falsetto range) at number 63 R&B, they recorded some outstanding tracks that range from smokin' dance tracks to heart-melting ballads. The debut LP Skipworth and Turner, which the duo shared production credits with Adams and Philly soul keyboardist/producer Ron Kersey (the Trammps' "Disco Inferno"), was released by Warner Bros. in the summer of 1986.

Besides the two charting singles, the album's highlights are Kersey's Latin-tinged "Wont Get No Better," "Let Me Down Easy," and the instrumental "Nepenthe." The mid-tempo groover "Make It Last," co-written by Raymond Earl and Kim Miller of Instant Funk, was included on the duo's Harlem Nights LP, released by 4th and Broadway.

The propulsive "Someday You'll Come Back to Me" has influences gleamed from their '80s
contemporaries the System. The tender ballad "How Much Is Too Much" was written and produced by frequent Adams collaborator Leroy Burgess (Black Ivory, Phreek, Herbie Mann) and originally on Harlem Nights.

Shirley Jones - Always In The Mood 1986

Shirley Jones - Always In The Mood 1986
Shirley Jones & the Jones Girls comprised of: Brenda Elaine Jones Williams [Born:] 7th December 1954. Shirley Yvonne Jones [Born:] 22nd September 1953. Valorie Denise Jones [Born:] 17th April 1956, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. [Died:] 2nd December 2001, Sinai Grace Hospital, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.

The Jones Girls were, originally, from Detroit and were the daughters of the singer Mary Frazier Jones (the spelling on the sleeve above is incorrect according to Brenda).

The came to fame after working with Diana Ross on a U.S. tour. The Girls had toured with the Four Tops additionally, as well as Little Richard, The Impressions and B.B. King. In 1970, they recorded the songs 'Learn How To Love' (on Ember Records) and 'My Own Special Way' (on Ember Records, additionally).

A year later, saw the release of 'Oh I Feel Good' and 'Put A Little Love In Your Heart'. In 1972, they had further singles released including 'Come Back' (on the Music Merchant imprint, a subsidiary of the Holland / Dozier / Holland Invictus label), 'You're The Only Bargain I've Got' and 'Your Love Controls Me' (on the Music Merchant imprint). 1973, saw the single 'Taster Of The Honey' released on the Music Merchant imprint.

Early in 1974, the Girls recorded two songs entitled ''If You Don't Love Me No More' (Paramount 0279) b/w 'If You Don't Start Nothing', which were initially released on that Paramount imprint.

In 1974, their attributed debut single entitled 'Will You Be There' was released for the Paramount imprint (Paramount 0921), a song that was accompanied by the single 'I Need You' for the same label.

It was through their association with the Impressions, that the Girls met Curtis Mayfield who took them to his, Chicago based, Curtom Imprint, where they recorded several sides.

These included 'I Turn To You' (Curtom 0102), in 1975 and the songs 'Misteri' ('Mister-I') and 'Hey Lucinda' b/w 'Dr Big Smile' (CMS 0108).

At this time the Girls recorded several sides that were never released. These included 'Treat Me Like A Lady', 'Waiting For The Last Goodbye', 'The Proof Is In The Pudding', 'Man On The Take' and 'Plain Jane'.

By 1978 they had sang background vocals for Aretha Franklin on the Curtis Mayfield produced outing 'Almighty Fire'. They later recorded with Linda Clifford on 'Runaway Love' before the tour that took them to a higher level with Diana Ross.

The Jones Girls accompanied Diana on a marathon tour which took them to Philadelphia and to the attention of Kenny Gamble. They had also worked with Diana Ross in the studio, however, none of these sides have seen the light of day.

At Philadelphia International, they provided background vocals for other artists at the label. These include Dexter Wansel, Lou Rawls and Jean Carn. Kenny Gamble recruited the Girls to his Philadelphia International imprint in 1979 and a series of excellent releases followed.

There they released four albums, 'The Jones Girls' in 1979, (including 'This Feeling's Killing Me', 'You Gonna Make Me Love Somebody Else' and 'Life Goes On'), 'At Peace With Woman' in 1980, (including 'Dance Turned Into A Romance' and 'Let's Celebrate'), 'Get As Much Love As You Can' in 1981, (including 'Nights Over Egypt' and 'Love Don't Ever Say Goodbye'), and 'Keep It Comin' in 1984, (including 'You Can't Have My Love' and 'Ah Ah Ah Ah', a collaboration with Keni Burke.

Away from Philadelphia they provided background vocals for the likes of , Freda Payne, Lamont Dozier, Thelma Houston, Norman Connors ('Take It To The Limit'), Prince Phillip Mitchell ('Make It Good'), L.J. Reynolds, Michael Pedicin Jr, Glenn Jones ('I Am Somebody'), Margie Joseph, Brass Fever ('Time Is Running Out'), Walter Jackson, George Duke, Noel Pointer and Bobby Wilson.

In 1983 they relocated from Philadelphia International to the RCA imprint for one album entitled 'On Target', (including '2 Win U Back', 'On Target' and 'Knockin').

Shirley Jones debut solo album 'Always In The Mood' was released in 1986 and charted with the single 'Do You Get Enough Love?'.

Shirley Brown - Intimate Storm 1985

Shirley Brown - Intimate Storm 1985
[Born:] Shirley Brown, 6th January 1947, West Memphis, Arkansas, U.S.A.

From Arkansas, Shirley Brown is, probably, best remembered for her single 'Woman to Woman' which was released in 1974, and (unsuccessfully) nominated for a Grammy Award in 1975. When she was a child, Shirley's family relocated to East St. Louis, Missouri, where he began to sing in a Baptist church at the age of 10.

Having focused mainly on spiritual performances, she began to concentrate more on secular music and sang with many of St Louis's local Soul singers.

Shirley met Oliver Sain, who helped her record some songs for the ABET imprint including 'I Ain't Gonna Tell' and 'Love is Built on a Strong Foundation'. Her performances came to the attention of Albert King, who later became her manager. Albert had spent several years working on the St. Louis nightclub circuit prior to recording the Jim Stewart / Al Jackson produced 'Woman To Woman', with Shirley, for the Stax subsidiary, Truth, in 1974.

Written by the songwriting team of Homer Banks and Henderson Thigpen, the song encapsulated the 'cheating' genre of Soul Music. The song not only became a massive hit in its own right, it inspired several 'answer' songs in the process, amongst which Millie Jackson's 'Still Caught Up' is a good example.

'Woman To Woman' was the last hit for the Stax label and its success delayed its bankruptcy for several months. Shirley relocated to the Arista imprint, and was one of the first signings by Clive Davis.

Recently, Shirley said, of those days, 'At Arista, Clive Davis wanted me to do a Bette Midler song or something like Barbra Streisand. I could probably sing those kinds of songs, but I didn't feel them'.

Shirley had further R & B hits with 'It Ain't No Fun' (1975) and 'Blessed Is The Woman (With A Man Like Mine)' (1977), and continued her recording career into the millennium recording with the Malaco subsidiary Dome.

A couple of seven inch 45's were recorded in the mid eighties. Both released in 1986, 'Shootin' a Blank was recorded for the Chelsea Avenue Records imprint, whilst 'If This Is Goodbye' b/w 'After Tonight', for a small independent label called Black Diamond.

Two years earlier, Shirley had released, probably, one of her finest albums for Sound Town, the Homer Banks produced, 'Intimate Storm'. The album included the popular songs 'Boyfriend', 'Looking For The Real Thing' and the infectious 'This Used To Be Your House'.

In 1989, four years after her 1984 album, Shirley recorded, 'Fire & Ice', which reached number 66 on the U.S. R & B charts.
A Bobby Womack duet (a Brenda Lee Eager song) from the set, 'Ain't Nothin' Like The Lovin' We Got', peaked at number 46 on the U.S. R&B charts. She continued to release material, including 'Timeless' (1991) and 'Diva of Soul' in recent years. 'Timeless' made number 63 on the U.S. R & B charts, whilst 'Diva of Soul' (1995) made number 67 on the U.S. R&B charts.

The new Millennium saw the abums 'Holding My Own' (2000), 'Woman Enough' (2004) and, a new album 'Unleashed' (2009). Shirley Brown is often favourably compared to the Queen Of Soul, Aretha Franklin. his is considered a completely worthy comparison within Soul circles. Her voice deserves a much wider audience.

Shirley Brown - Woman To Woman 1975

Shirley Brown - Woman To Woman 1975
Shirley Brown [Born:] January 6, 1947, West Memphis, Arkansas) is an American soul singer, best known for her million-selling single "Woman to Woman" which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 1975. Brown was born in West Memphis, but was raised in East St Louis. Early experience singing gospel gave her a powerful but expressive voice likened to Aretha Franklin.

She worked with Albert King and bandleader Oliver Sain, before signing with Stax Records in Memphis, Tennessee. Her 1974 hit, "Woman to Woman" spent two weeks at #1 in the Billboard R&B chart and climbed to #22 in the Billboard Hot 100. It sold over one million copies by December 1974, and was awarded a gold disc. It was to prove to be Stax's final major hit record, (the song was later covered by Barbara Mandrell in 1978 and became a top-five country hit).

A successful debut album, Woman to Woman was released by Stax on their Truth label, but by 1975, the company was struggling financially and also facing litigation. A follow-up single, "It Ain't No Fun" was only a moderate success, and Stax closed soon afterwards. Her signing to Arista Records in 1977 resulted in the album Shirley Brown, produced by the former Stax owner Jim Stewart and writer-producer Bettye Crutcher, who provided most of the songs.

These included "Blessed Is The Woman" which reached #14 R&B (#102 pop). Brown continued to record for several labels since then, including Fantasy, on the re-formed Stax label, and Sound Town. She has been with the Mississippi based blues and soul label, Malaco Records since the late 1980s. She remains a popular live performer, mainly in southern states of the US, without having found the recording success of her earlier years.

Shalamar - Three For Love 1981

Shalamar - Three For Love 1981
The Howard Hewett/Jody Daniels/Jeffrey Daniels edition of Shalamar was in excellent form on Big Fun, Friends and The Look, but if one had to pinpoint the group’s best release ever, the hands-down winner would have to be its fourth album, Three for Love. With Leon Sylvers III producing and members of Shalamar and Lakeside contributing to the writing, all of the pieces fell into place quite nicely.

Shalamar enjoyed major hits with the irresistible “Make That Move” and the sentimental ballad “This Is for the Lover in You,” and every bit as strong are the funky “Pop Along Kid” and the dreamy “Somewhere There’s a Love.” A non-musical point: when The Right Stuff reissued Three For Love on CD in 1997, the liner notes stated “copyright 1978,” but in fact, the album wasn’t released until late 1980; there’s no way Three for Love could have even been recorded in 1978 because Hewett had yet to join Shalamar. But the main thing is the music, and the CD reissue certainly sounds great. Three for Love is soul-pop heaven.

1. Full Of Fire
2. Attention To My Baby
3. Somewhere There’s A Love
4. Somethings Never Change

Friends is the sixth album by American R&B group Shalamar, released in 1982 on the SOLAR label. The album features the 'classic' Shalamar line-up (Jeffrey Daniel, Howard Hewett and Jody Watley). It topped the R&B chart and peaked at #35 on the Billboard chart. In the United Kingdom Friends gained impetus from a now-legendary demonstration of body-popping by Daniel during a performance of "A Night to Remember" on the BBC programme Top of the Pops.

It reached #6 on the UK Albums Chart and produced four top 20 singles. It is now regarded in the UK as one of the defining albums of 1982. In 2002, Friends was re-released by Sanctuary Records in the United Kingdom in a Double CD package with Shalamar's previous album Go for It.

Soul II Soul - A New Decade 1990

Soul II Soul - A New Decade 1990
Led by producer/vocalist/songwriter Jazzie B., Soul II Soul were one of the most innovative dance/R&B outfits of the late '80s, creating a seductive, deep R&B that borrowed from Philly soul, disco, reggae, and '80s hip-hop. Originally featuring Jazzie B., producer/arranger Nellee Hooper, and instrumentalist Philip "Daddae" Harvey, the musical collective came together in the late '80s.

The group had a residency at the Africa Centre in London's Covent Garden, which led to a record contract with 10, a subsidiary of Virgin. Two singles, "Fairplay" and "Feel Free," began to attract attention both in clubs and in the press. Featuring the vocals of Caron Wheeler, Soul II Soul's third single, "Keep on Movin'," reached the U.K. Top Ten in March of 1989. Released in the summer of 1989, "Back to Life" also featured Wheeler and became another Top Ten hit.

Soul II Soul released their debut album, Club Classics, Vol. 1, shortly afterward. The album was released in America under the title Keep on Movin'; both "Keep on Movin'" and "Get a Life" became substantial hits, propelling the album to double platinum status. Wheeler left the group before the recording of the group's second album, Vol. II: 1990 - A New Decade. The album debuted at number one in the U.K., yet it caught the group in a holding pattern.

Hooper soon left the collective, leaving Jazzie B. to soldier on alone. Hooper went on to work with several of the most influential and popular acts of the early '90s, including Massive Attack (Blue Lines), Björk (Debut and Post), Madonna (Bedtime Stories), and U2 ("Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me"). In 1992, Soul II Soul released Vol. III: Just Right, to both lukewarm reviews and sales. After the compilation Vol. IV: The Classic Singles, the group's next studio album, Vol. V: Believe, appeared in 1995.

Soul II Soul - Club Classics Volume One 1989

This tenth anniversary reissue of Soul II Soul's groundbreaking debut album provides a good opportunity to look back and see how influential it really was -- these dark, jazz-inflected grooves still resonate in the deep house, acid jazz and illbient music of the late 1990s.

And even if "Keep on Movin'," the album's lead track and centerpiece, is way overrated as a song, Caron Wheeler's voice still cuts through it shiningly; Rose Windross isn't far behind Wheeler on the more substantial "Fairplay." Bandleader Jazzie B, on the other hand, is a great arranger and a passable rapper (at his best on the very fine "Feelin' Free," which features the future members of Massive Attack on background vocals), but his singing sounds pretty sorry in this company.

But the vocals are less important than the grooves, of course, and these are consistently excellent, often spiced up with jazz flute or buoyed by the strings of the Reggae Philharmonic Orchestra. The reissue adds an extra 30 minutes of remixes, including a great drum n' bass treatment of "Keep on Movin'" and an equally compelling remix of the Caron Wheeler showcase "Back to Life (However Do You Want Me).

Tracks:

1. Keep On Movin' 6:02
2. Fairplay 3:58
3. Holdin' On (Bambelela) 3:51
4. Feeling Free (Live Rap) 4:16
5. African Dance 6:09
6. Dance 3:41
7. Feel Free 5:05
8. Happiness (Dub) 5:33
9. Back To Life (Accapella) 3:50
10. Jazzie's Groove 2:39
